We want to find a car/suv for our daughter (dental school). She will travel-lot luggage-any suggestions?
She will have a eight hour drive. We want her to have trunk space, etc. for moving boxes and lugguage-needs to have good gas mileage and an affordable price.
Since you want luggage space and fuel econ, your best bet will be a wagon or compact suv. go with suvs if you must have the extra space and/or AWD, if not buy a wagon instead.
If you want an suv, ford escape will be on top of my list, its comfortable for long trips, luggage space is very roomy, and it also comes in hybrid if you really want the fuel econ, just remember the 3.0 is a fuel drinker. If youre buying used, avoid the 2.0 as well as its noisy and prone to engine problems, go for the 2.3.
Another choice is honda cr-v, its a better fuel saver than the ford and reliability is also better, but its pricier and less comfortable on long trips (from personal experience, seats kinda hurt my back and tire noise very prominent after 5 hrs drive).
As for wagons I highly recommend a mazda3 wagon. Its a very stylish wagon inside out, good quality, great fuel mileage and decent ride. Fuel econ suffers a little of you go for the bigger 2.3l engine, but its still very reasonable.
Use these infos as considerations only. I suggest you and your daughter try the cars yourself before buying, so she can decide which suits her best.
